Torvald Torén (1945-2001) studied at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm, under Stina Sundell, piano and Gotthard Arnér, organ, and received soloist diplomas both for piano and organ. He also studied abroad under Maurice Duruflé, Jean Langlais and Flor Peeters. Torvald Torén was organist of Hedvig Eleonora Church, Stockholm, from 1966 (on staff since 1972) and organ teacher at the Royal College of Music from 1983 (professor, 1994) until his death in 2001.
Torvald Torén gave many concerts in Europe, especially in France, where he was invited to give concerts in most of the famous churches. He was also saught after as a lecturer and as a member of international organ competitions. Torvald Torén’s repertoire was extensive. He paid special attention to the romantic and twentieth century French organ music and won international acclaim for his interpretations. Torvald Torén was elected member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Music in 1993.
Torvald Torén made numerous recordings for the Swedish radio and some twenty records, for exemple the Trio Sonatas of Bach, the complete organ works of Franck and Duruflé, and the six symphonies of Vierne. For his recordings he received the Swedish gramophone price of 1982 and 1984.
